What is the difference between domestic energy and business energy?

The main difference between the two is price. Business energy prices are usually lower than domestic energy prices. Domestic customers can also not buy gas and electricity separately in the same businesses can. However, businesses also must pay an additional 15% VAT on their energy bill compared to domestic customers.

Who supplies my business energy?

If you have just moved to a new property, the best way to find your current supplier would be to contact the previous building owner or landlord to find out who the energy supplier is.

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter comes with a small device that you can use to see how much gas and electricity you are consuming. This allows you to monitor and reduce energy usage in your business.

Does my business need a half-hourly meter?

Your business will need a half-hourly meter if you have a peak electricity usage of 100 KW or above.

Are business energy prices capped?

What information do I need to switch energy contracts?

  • Contact details
  • Business address
  • MPAN / MPR number

What is an MPAN?

This stands for Meter Point Administration Number, which is used to identify individual electricity supply points. This is usually a 21-digit number. You will usually be able to find this number on a recent electricity bill. This number is needed when you switch suppliers to identify your supply point or property.

How long can I fix my contract?

Businesses can usually fix energy contracts for up to five years. This can depend on the energy supplier you go with and the current market state.

What is a deemed contract?

Deemed or out-of-contract rates are usually amongst the supplier’s highest rates. You will end up on deemed rates if you don’t agree upon a new contract price before your current energy contract ends.
